Eight blocks

Thirty-two controls, all in the Inspector

Grouped into eight collapsible sections. You can use only the first one and keep a static cut-out, or switch on the whole animation.

  • 9

    Paper

The thickness of the white stroke, its colour, how ragged the torn edge is, the amount of wrinkles and the grain. This is what turns your image into actual paper.

  • 5

    Opening

How the cut-out arrives: unfolding flat, un-crumpling like a ball of paper, or flying in like a paper plane. With its duration set in frames.

  • 3

    Closing

The same in reverse, at the end of the clip. You can leave it off if you would rather the paper stayed on screen.

  • 3

    Levitation

A continuous, gentle sway, as if the paper were floating. No keyframes needed: switch it on and it moves.

  • 5

    Shadow

Its own shadow under the cut-out, with distance, angle, blur and opacity. This is what lifts the paper off the background.

  • 3

    Stop motion

Drops the frame rate of the movement so it steps, just like handmade cut-out animation.

  • 3

    Position and size

Move and scale the cut-out within the frame without touching the original clip.

  • 1

    Finish

The overall opacity of the effect, in case you want to blend it with what is underneath.

What you get

How it works

Three steps and the paper is on screen

  1. Install

Quit Resolve and run the installer for your system. It detects which language your DaVinci is in and copies the matching version. One minute, once.

  2. Drag

On the Edit page, Effects panel, "ResolvePacks" category. Drag Paper Animator onto your clip and you will see the paper forming in the viewer.

  3. Adjust

All 32 controls appear in the Inspector, Effects tab, grouped into eight collapsible blocks. Start with the opening mode and the border thickness.

DaVinci Resolve 18 or newer
Free version
Yes, it works. The effect is built purely from standard Fusion nodes, nothing Studio-only

Windows and macOS, automatic installer on both
Tested on
Windows. The macOS installer is included and documented, but I have not been able to verify it on a Mac, so I cannot guarantee it works on that system
Languages
Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese
What to apply it to
Images with transparency, Text+ titles and cut-out objects. On plain footage the paper wraps the whole rectangle, like a photo print

Effect questions

What people ask me most

What can I apply it to?

The white stroke follows the transparency of the clip. With a PNG on a transparent background, a Text+ title or an already cut-out object, the paper hugs that silhouette. Applied to plain footage, the border wraps the whole rectangle and it looks like a paper photo print — which is a perfectly good use too.

Do I have to set keyframes?

None. Opening, closing and levitation are switched on with a checkbox and their duration is set in frames. The effect animates itself.

Does it work with text?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses for it. Resolve Text+ titles already carry their own transparency, so the paper crops around the letters with nothing to prepare.

What language will the controls be in?

The same one your DaVinci Resolve is in, if you use the automatic installer: it detects the program language and copies the matching version out of the eleven available. If your Resolve is in a language not on the list, it installs in English.

I changed my Resolve language — what now?

Just run the installer again. It will detect the new language and replace the previous version. There is no need to uninstall first.

Can I use it in client work?

Yes, unlimited personal and commercial use. The only thing you cannot do is resell or redistribute the effect file itself.
